Who are Priory Healthcare?
Priory is the leading independent provider of behavioural care in the UK and our purpose is to make a real and lasting difference for everyone we support. Priory Healthcare has structured its services to align with the NHS provision, in order to ensure a consistent approach to treatment.
Our extensive national network means that we are able to offer a full care pathway for patients, depending on their unique needs and the intensity of the support that is required. These include dedicated NHS care pathways from our secure services right through to a return to community living.
In the last year, we have opened a range of new wards, services and centres, enabling us to broaden our offerings and deliver increased responsiveness to the needs of the NHS, in line with regional and national demands.
We are ready to take emergency placements from the NHS 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for adult acute mental health, PICU, adult eating disorders and CAMHS.
How has Priory Healthcare improved outcomes for the NHS and patients?
We set out to deliver the highest quality care and support to those people who access our services. We work to empower our colleagues to deliver the highest standards of support, care and treatment, and help our colleagues to do this by facilitating a culture of transparency and openness, using evidence-based practice and enabling continuous learning and improvement opportunities.
Our care and support teams are supported by a corporate assurance function that includes an internal inspection team. This enables our services to be safe and effectively regulated and enhances the effectiveness and delivery of high quality treatment.
Achieving positive outcomes, coupled with the experiences of our patients and colleagues, are at the heart of everything that we do. This approach is also reflective of the national agenda for quality.
Our priorities for driving quality within Priory are to:
· Exceed national standards of care
· Improve outcomes for both our adult and adolescent patients
· Deliver safe and secure services
· Ensure a positive experience of care for all who use our services
· Invest in our colleagues through education and training
· Ensure that our policies and procedures are up to date, evidence-based and take into consideration regional variations i.e. Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and England
The past 12 months have been hugely challenging for all of those working across the healthcare sector, yet we still strived to provide the best possible support to those in our care, whilst taking the required measures to reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19. We adapted our healthcare services, ensuring we were able to continue helping those in need, and support often vulnerable and confused individuals through a period of such uncertainty.
In meeting the challenges of the pandemic, the central role of consistently applied quality has never been more important. Some of our quality achievements include:
· 95% of acute and addictions service users were satisfied with the overall quality of care
· 94% of eating disorders service users were satisfied with the overall quality of care
· 84.2% of our 76 Care Quality Commission (CQC)-registered healthcare sites in England are ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’
· An increase in safeguarding training compliance across the group to 87.6%
During this period, onsite and remote inspections took place across Priory Healthcare when safe to do so in line with statutory guidance related to COVID-19. Inspection activity was as follows:
· 130 internal regulatory compliance
· inspection visits
· 38 fire risk assessments
· 94 health and safety internal audits and 20 support visits
Priory Healthcare's 24/7 customer service centre, provides around the clock support for NHS mental health enquiries and referrals, demonstrating our commitment to providing the best possible mental health support to the NHS.
The call centre provides a single point of access for enquiries and referrals. Our customer referral co-ordinators support referrers from their first call right through to the enquiry conclusion, providing updates throughout the process.
We have also launched a new NHS acute triage service, providing a focused triage assessment and reducing the amount of time that it takes for individuals to access the expert mental healthcare that they need.
What has been your greatest achievement to date? And were there any measurable outcomes that accompanied this achievement?
All Priory services are also regularly scrutinised by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and assessed against their standards. As a result, 84.2% of our 76 CQC-registered healthcare sites in England are ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’. This compares with other NHS mental healthcare sites (81%), and compared to the independent mental health sector as a whole (75%). However, we remain very clear that there is no room for complacency and we want to see all of our hospitals to be rated as ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’, and the equivalents in the other constituent parts of the UK.
How many organisations/clients currently utilise the service/solution across the UK?
Priory Healthcare can provide residential support for up to 3,000 people at any time across our range of services, which provide support for adults, children and adolescents. We work closely with NHSE, along with providing support for commissioners throughout the UK.
Is there anything you would like to make delegates aware of ahead of the NHS Long Term Plan 2021 conference?
The care that we provide is part of an overall patient pathway and we are always delighted to work closely with NHS providers to make referrals, transfers and discharges as safe and seamless as possible.
We welcome NHS commissioners to visit our facilities to see our treatment environments, meet our expert staff, find out more about our care programmes, and gain a feel for our commitment to outcomes-focused treatment.
What do you feel are the key points delegates need to digest when considering a partnership with Priory Healthcare?
Our key aims are to reduce or end problem behaviours, manage risk and work towards discharge from the point of assessment, where appropriate.
Priory Healthcare and Priory Adult Care are working cohesively to support the Transforming Care Agenda in its commitment to improving health and care services. By offering the right support, we can enable more people to live in the community and closer to home.
