Mental health 2019 - Partner Profile - PCMIS Health Technologies

Who are PCMIS?

PCMIS Health Technologies Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary company of the University of York. We specialise in technology solutions designed to help healthcare providers effectively manage their services, whilst improving access and treatment outcomes for patients. Our flagship product is ‘PCMIS’ (Patient Case Management Information System) - a flexible, intelligent and easy to use case management system. ‘PCMIS’ supports a wide range of mental health services in the UK as well as Australia, enabling them to confidently collect, analyse and report on patient data and effectively manage service activity.

How has PCMIS improved people’s mental health in the UK?

With a strong link to the University of York’s world-leading Mental Health and Addiction Research Group (MHARG), our technology is underpinned by innovative, evidence-based mental health research designed and proven to improve patient outcomes. Our online eReferral and patient portal tools enable people to quickly and easily gain access to the mental health support they need, and our clinically proven supervisor alert system is designed to ensure that no patient ‘falls down gaps’ in services, increasing clinical safety and quality of care. Our latest innovation is Outcome Feedback technology, an ‘expected treatment response’ tool within PCMIS. A large-scale randomised controlled trial across 8 NHS trusts found that, when used as part of treatment for anxiety and depression, Outcome Feedback leads to a 73% reduction in the risk of complex cases deteriorating during treatment.

What has been your greatest achievement to date? And were there any measurable outcomes that accompanied this achievement?

As a long-standing and trusted technology partner of NHS England, we have supported numerous large-scale clinical trials aimed at improving mental health care provision at population level. We do this by accurately capturing important data, which is then analysed and used to provide evidence for the wide scale implementation of mental health interventions. For example, back in 2007 we were instrumental in providing evidence to support the national implementation of the IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) programme, with 100% data completeness from the initial trial site in Doncaster and subsequent Pathfinder sites. Now over 10 years old, IAPT is a global exemplar in the provision of treatment for those dealing with mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression. PCMIS is proud to continue to support the IAPT programme’s ongoing growth and expansion.

How many organisations/clients currently utilise the service/solution across the UK?

1 in 3 NHS IAPT services currently use PCMIS and our integrated online tools such as eReferral and Patient Portal. We also work with CYP (Children and Young People) mental health services, Student Support Services in Universities, Military Veterans support services, third sector organisations such as Mind, and trauma response support.

Is there anything you would like to make delegates aware of ahead of the Mental Health 2019 conference on 26 September?

We would welcome the opportunity to speak to delegates about Outcome Feedback, our innovative expected treatment response tool. Outcome Feedback is proven to reduce the risk of deterioration during treatment, reduce the number of sessions required to reach symptom improvement, and help reduce costs for mental health services. Ask us about our IAPT Case Study or just pop over for a chat!

What do you feel are the key points delegates need to digest when considering a partnership with University of York?

We are research-led and evidence-based, designed by clinicians for clinicians and not operating for commercial gain within the NHS. As a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of York, our focus is on making a positive impact in people’s lives through partnerships with experts in technology and health care. We believe strongly in collaboration and welcome approaches from any parties interested in working together to deliver improvements in healthcare.
