Who are Magstim?

Magstim® is a British-based medical device manufacturer and leading supplier of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) stimulators, coils and complete packages used for both Magstim TMS therapy and neuromodulation research.

Magstim TMS Therapy for depression is an effective, non-invasive, outpatient treatment, with few known adverse effects.

85% of TMS research published worldwide uses Magstim stimulators and Magstim’s product range provides users with the versatility and capability needed for a wide range of research applications.

Magstim employs over 100 people, the majority of which work at our head offices in West Wales, UK and Minnesota, USA.

With representation in over 70 countries and systems in more than 90 countries worldwide, Magstim is proud to be The Brains Behind TMS™.

How has Magstim improved people's mental health in the UK?

The technology of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation was commercialised by Magstim and in addition to being at the forefront of neuroscience research, Magstim designs and manufactures solutions for neuromodulation in the treatment of depression, anxiety, PTSD and eating disorders.

What has been your greatest achievement to date? And were there any measurable outcomes that accompanied this achievement?

Magstim’s greatest achievements can be found in our patient outcomes. Receiving testimonials from patients who recognise that our technology is ‘life-changing’ is our major reward.

“The day I began treatment was one of the best days of my life.”

- Bridget, (TMS patient)

“I feel like a new person and my family says that they are glad to finally have ‘me’ back.”

- Kathy, (TMS patient)

“[TMS Therapy] gives me the opportunity to actually live my life for the first time.”

- Rob, (TMS patient)

Gaining FDA approval in May 2015 and NICE clearance in December 2015 has allowed us to help so many individuals and Magstim recently announced two new major contracts in the USA – the first with the VA and the second with LifeStance - a national provider of behavioural healthcare services.

How many organisations/clients currently utilise the service/solution across the UK?

Magstim TMS systems can be found in almost all universities for the purpose of neuroscience research and we are currently involved in an NHS study. The clinical treatment of depression with TMS was cleared by NICE in December 2015 and since then there has been a steady increase in the awareness and adoption of this course of treatment by both the NHS and the private sector. A conservative estimate would be that there are more than 350 Magstim TMS systems in the UK alone.

Is there anything you would like to make delegates aware of ahead of the Mental Health 2019 conference on 26th September?

The clinical treatment of mood disorders with non-invasive TMS has evolved over the last few years and cleared protocols now include a 3 minute treatment for patients. Magstim stimulators are being used in a current NHS study looking at the effectiveness of these new protocols combined with StimGuide, our navigated coil placement system.

With Magstim's pedigree in research, all of our systems are future proof and can be programmed by the user to benefit from the latest research and trial results.

What do you feel are the key points delegates need to digest when considering a partnership with Magstim?

As The Brains Behind TMS™, Magstim is helping patients rediscover the colour of life. A high proportion of patients with resistance to medication who receive treatment with the Magstim solution do respond.
