What is Med-Easy™
Med-Easy™ is a liquid swallowing aid designed to help those with dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, take their solid dose medication.
Med-Easy™ eases the passage of medicines through the oesophagus into the stomach. It does so by wrapping around the medication which means instead of resting on the surface of the tongue, the medication is suspended in the liquid. As the patient swallows, the external edges of the liquid flow faster than the centre, allowing the tablet and Med-Easy™ to flow freely down into the oesophagus.
How has Med-Easy™ improved patient safety and care across the health sector?
Dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, is a condition which effects millions of people in the UK.
Dysphagia may occur for several reasons such as physical or mental illness, as a side effect of medication or treatment, due to old age or due to general pill anxiety.
Those who cannot swallow solid dose medication often resort to crushing or splitting tablets/pills and/or mixing with food substances which is not safe, can have negative interactions and can cause serious harm. Also, due to difficulty swallowing it is common that patients may not finish a full course of medication.
The only safe alternative for patients with dysphagia is for a liquid medication to be specially manufactured at significant cost to the NHS.
Med-Easy™ is a safe and cost effect alternative to the options currently available to patients suffering from dysphagia and can significantly improve patient experience and quality of life whilst saving money for the NHS.
What has been your greatest achievement to date? And were there any measurable outcomes that accompanied this achievement?
Med-Easy™ has significantly improved the swallowing experience and quality of life of a number of patients.
Chris Curtis survived head and neck cancer but was left with swallowing difficulties after his treatment. He’s required to take over 10 tablets per day which he found extremely challenging. Med-Easy™ helped him swallow tablets without difficulty for the first time in 6 years.
Chané Jacobs suffers from Asperger’s syndrome and was unable to take her medication which was only available in tablet form. This meant she suffered extreme anxiety and was unable to sleep. Thanks to Med-Easy™ she is now able to take her medication which allows her to sleep and manage her anxiety. She is now studying through the Open University which is something she wouldn’t have been able to do until she used Med-Easy™.
How many organisations currently utilise the systems/solution across the UK?
Med-Easy™ is available to buy online and through a number of pharmacy chains and independent pharmacy chains in the UK. There is a definitive need for this product in the community and within the NHS. We are currently engaging with NHS stakeholders to help make the product available on prescription.
What would you like to tell the attendees in advance of the conference, and when considering a partnership with Med-Easy™?
Consider the number of patients in the UK that suffer from dysphagia or swallowing difficulties across various physical and mental illnesses, due to existing medication or treatment, pill anxiety or old age. Consider their current options for taking solid dose medication and how unsafe they are. Also consider the cost to the NHS of the only safe alternative.
Med-Easy™ is a liquid swallowing aid which helps those with dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, take their solid dose medication. It is a Class I Medical Device and contains only safe ingredients.
