How has Smith & Nephew improved patient safety and care across the health sector?
Achieving NICE Guidance for PICO Negative Pressure recommending the following:
Evidence supports the case for adopting Smith+Nephews PICO negative pressure wound dressings for closed surgical incisions in the NHS. They are associated with fewer surgical site infections and seromas compared with standard wound dressings.
PICO negative pressure wound dressings should be considered as an option for closed surgical incisions in people who are at high risk of developing surgical site infections.
Cost modelling suggests that PICO negative pressure wound dressings provide extra clinical benefits at a similar overall cost compared with standard wound dressings.
What has been your greatest achievement to date?
Achieving NICE Guidance for our PICO 7 Negative Pressure Wound Therapy range for the use on Closed Incisions. https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/mtg43
And were there any measurable outcomes that accompanied this achievement?
Yes: Nice Evidence supports the case for adopting PICO negative pressure wound dressings for closed surgical incisions in the NHS. Specifically PICO 7 negative pressure supports the reduction of surgical site infections by 63% and reduces seromas up to 77% compared with standard wound dressings. There are obvious tangible health economic benefits such as reduced length of stay resulting from these outcomes.
Relevant evidence comes from 31 studies, 15 of which are randomised controlled trials.
