How are PPP Taking Care and its parent company, AXA, committed to improving dementia care in the UK?

PPP Taking Care and AXA PPP healthcare are committed to tackling dementia which directly and indirectly impacts on the lives of over 1.5 million people in the UK.

AXA is always looking to the future and how it can help people live better and enjoy healthier lives. It has supported Alzheimer’s Research UK, the UK’s leading research charity, since 2015. AXA staff in the UK have raised over £340,000 for the charity through fundraising. They also provide support by sharing professional expertise with them, ranging from marketing advice, providing data analytical tools and assistance on a variety of projects. AXA also arranges regular talks and lab tours with the charity to keep its staff up to date on tackling dementia. Employees are taught how to be more understanding of the condition, and to recognise and feel confident about how to support people in the community with dementia. It already has 2,500 ‘Dementia Friends’ amongst its workforce, which is estimated to be one of the biggest groups in the UK. As part of this, it is supporting the Alzheimer’s Dementia Friends campaign, which helps people living with dementia to continue to live independent lives. AXA recently made a video demonstrating the positive impact of Dementia Friends in the London Borough of Merton.

AXA PPP healthcare also runs a Health Tech & You Awards programme to support and promote innovation in health technology. Among the categories is the ‘Innovations in the Early Diagnosis of Dementia’ category. In partnership with Alzheimer’s Research UK, the category aims to identify excellence in design innovation and technological development that can support the early diagnosis of dementia.

Is there anything you would like to make delegates aware of ahead of the Dementia 2020 conference on 30th April?

As part of the 2018 Health Tech & You Awards ‘Innovations in the Early Diagnosis of Dementia’ category, AXA recognised three finalists in this category that it believes really could make a difference in the future of dementia care. AXA is proud to provide a platform where these businesses can become recognised within the industry.

· Aparito: A digital health platform that provides wearable devices and disease-specific mobile apps to provide remote patient monitoring outside of the hospital environment. This continued monitoring provides real-time data for clinicians to capture subtle differences in ambulation and sleeping patterns, which can’t be conveyed during short, snapshot clinic visits, in a way that actively supports and enhances diagnosis, treatment and drug development. Aparito is also developing a tool which can measure differences in speech patterns. (www.aparito.com)

· Cognetivity: A five minute integrated cognitive assessment (ICA) tool that looks for the earliest signs of impairment by testing the performance of large areas of the brain. The ICA is easy to administer and can learn as it gathers new data to improve its ability to diagnose. As well as having the potential to be a highly effective dementia screening tool, the ICA can also be used for remote monitoring of the progression of diseases and measuring the effectiveness of treatments. · Memrica: A system in the concept stage that aims to detect changes in physical and social behaviour as an early indicator for dementia. Memrica has been reviewing previous research on multiple indicators and is certain there's an opportunity to bring currently separate strands of thinking and analysis together to create a simple indicator of risk.
